Jim McKay, Legend of the Game

Jim McKay dies
McKay’s iconic opening “Spanning the globe …” and “the thrill of victory, the agony of defeat,” had already made him a household name as host of ABC’s Wide World of Sports by the time he got to Munich.

But his 16 hours of work on the long day that began with the kidnapping of the Israeli team at Munich’s Olympic Village and ended with the deaths of 11 athletes at the hands of Palestinian extremists, created a legend.
