Who are those guys?

It truly is amazing who the influences are in our lives.

——————————————-

Legendary actor Paul Newman dies at 83 after long battle with cancer
With his strong, classically handsome face and piercing blue eyes, Newman was a heartthrob just as likely to play against his looks, becoming a favourite with critics for his convincing portrayals of rebels, tough guys and losers. “I was always a character actor,” he once said. “I just looked like Little Red Riding Hood.”

Newman had a soft spot for underdogs in real life, giving tens of millions to charities through his food company and setting up camps for severely ill children. Passionately opposed to the Vietnam War, and in favour of civil rights, he was so famously liberal that he ended up on president Richard Nixon’s “enemies list,” one of the actor’s proudest achievements, he liked to say.

Without ever meeting him, it is still safe to say that Mr. Newman was, without a doubt, one of mine.

Actor, husband, father, sportsman, activist … etc.

May those Raindrops Keep Falling On Your Head … even now.

Raindrops keep fallin’ on my head
And just like the guy whose feet are too big for his bed
Nothin’ seems to fit
Those raindrops are fallin’ on my head, they keep fallin’

So I just did me some talkin’ to the sun
And I said I didn’t like the way he got things done
Sleepin’ on the job
Those raindrops are fallin’ on my head, they keep fallin’

But there’s one thing I know
The blues they send to meet me won’t defeat me
It won’t be long till happiness steps up to greet me

Raindrops keep fallin’ on my head
But that doesn’t mean my eyes will soon be turnin’ red
Cryin’s not for me
‘Cause I’m never gonna stop the rain by complainin’
Because I’m free
Nothin’s worryin’ me

It won’t be long till happiness steps up to greet me

Raindrops keep fallin’ on my head
But that doesn’t mean my eyes will soon be turnin’ red
Cryin’s not for me
‘Cause I’m never gonna stop the rain by complainin’
Because I’m free
Nothin’s worryin’ me

Khandor, didn’t know you were deep into Paul Newman…

RIP Paul Newman. One of the greatest actors ever. My favorite Paul Newman movie was Cool Hand Luke. And my favorite song Plastic Jesus http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYqwYrbwHeM

    Arsenalist,

Hopefully you clicked on all of the links and watched the 3 videos. 🙂

IMO … the ability to concentrate well … whether on just one thing, or on more than one thing suimultaneously … is of paramount importance for authentic success to occur in this world.

According to Mr. Newman … it was the one true ‘gift’ he was given, and he used it expertly.

[that, and, as he said … “A face you would not expect on a thief.”]

    I appreciate THAT gift. 🙂

When I look back over the course his illustrious film career there are just so many which are on my personal list of favourites, including …

Somebody Up There Likes Me, 1956
    The Left-Handed Gun, 1958
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, 1958
    The Young Philadelphians, 1959
    The Hustler, 1961
    Hud, 1963
    Hombre, 1967
    Cool Hand Luke, 1967
The Secret War of Harry Frigg, 1968
Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid, 1969
The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean, 1972
    The Sting, 1973
    Absence of Malice, 1981
    The Verdict, 1982
    The Color of Money, 1986
    Nobody’s Fool, 1994

I would simply not be telling the truth if I didn’t acknowledge that these works of art have [either subtlely or not so subtlely] influenced how I choose to live my life today … in terms of how I speak, how I move, how I think, and what it is I believe in.

When you put on top of these … the man’s work to initiate charitable foundations to benefit children everywhere, and his life-long commitment to the fundamental principles of what I’ll refer to as ‘Liberal Democratic Thought’, and his ‘every day common man’ humility … then, my friend, it’s a slam dunk.

When I woke on Saturday morning … it was my intention not to do anything on-line over the weekend.

Then I read the morning paper and saw that Paul Newman had died.

It was surprising to me … to discover exactly what THAT meant to me.

    ==========================

    As an aside …

It was later Saturday evening, when someone important in my life actually said to me, as a brief tribute to Mr. Newman aired on the tv, in the room we were in at the time,

“Hey, that’s what you do, right there … what he did, exactly, just like that. It’s uncanny.”

To which I could only reply,

“Yes, it is. I guess, I must have learned it from somewhere.”

    As I said before …

Style & Class, personified … in my book.

    Travis,

    Amen to that. 🙂
