Smart became “addicted” to coaching: he loved the game strategy, the competition, the ability to make an impact on the lives of students on and off the court. It soon dominated his life: he coached high school, club teams and development camps. “After I started coaching, I never really wanted to play again,” he says. “I was coaching 350 games a year. All I was doing was coaching. I wasn’t taking school seriously, I wasn’t taking any kind of work seriously.”
